MILDREDS - SOHO LONDON

MILDREDS

At Mildreds, they never play it safe. New flavours and bold ideas in all their dishes. The result… exciting, cutting edge vegan food in the world.

“The first Mildreds opened on Greek Street in 1988. Our ambition was to serve delicious vegetarian food to the discerning inhabitants and nighthawks of Soho that was anything but bland or boring.

Fast forward over 35 years and we’ve expanded beyond our Soho base with restaurants in Covent Garden, Camden Town, Kings Cross and Dalston, each offering fantastic hospitality as well as an adventurous menu of globally inspired food and drink.” Mildred’s website 2024

I first came across Mildred’s back in 2016 having been told about it by a friend who was at the time working in the nearby neighbourhood. She told me about this tiny little vegetarian restaurant in the heart of SOHO where you were not able to book, you had to turn up and hope for an available seat in their small but very inviting eating area. It sounded intriguing and I knew that I wanted to try it.

Given the chance I turned up at 12.00 on the dot, when their lunch time service started and fingers crossed, hoped for a space. People were known to share tables and wait patiently. I peered through the little cottage windows and could see mountains of vibrantly coloured salads and sides laid out on the counter and I knew instantly that this was going to be good.

I am not a vegetarian, I am not a vegan. I have, nor ever have I had, any dietary issues or requests. I am an easy customer. All I require is preferable fresh, well prepared, ideally seasonal and locally sourced (it just tastes better)ingredients. This looked just up my street.

Anyway, long story short, I got a seat. I had the most delicious sweet potato & cashew curry that I had ever had and I decided that I would likely be a fan for life!

I raved about this place to my husband when I got home and as you can see from the photos, we have continued to enjoy this gem of a place together. I still get the infamous sweet potato curry! Only If I can pick at my companions dish too though as most of what is on their menu thrills and intrigues me.

Full disclosure, since their recent expansion, I do not know if their ethos or their character has changed. I continue to visit the original location in SOHO and I do not know what the other locations offer in regards to atmosphere. I personally love the authenticity and coziness of the SOHO location. It is surely one of the biggest challenges of growing companies, how to remain authentic and maintain their charachter and standards. I hope that Mildreds manages to as I would love to continue to visit and enjoy their delicious food and lovely service.
