A California style bakery, informed by their Founder and Executive Chef Claire Ptak’s childhood near San Francisco and the traditions of French and British baking as much as the best seasonal ingredients they can get. All of their bakes are made with high quality organic ingredients, be it fresh fruit, dark chocolate, perfectly roasted espresso, or rich dairy.
Ever since I bought The Violet Bakery Cookbook by Clare Ptak and started making my way through it, I have been in love with all things Violet Bakery. From the seemingly obscure location, in that it is neither central, busy or intimidating to the intimate size of it’s perfectly formed onsite and openly presented baking and creating kitchen.
I love the style of the baking and I love the flavour combinations. I love that it is neither traditional or too out there. It is the perfect balance between showing respect to the classic bakes and also adding a little splash of something new and exciting.
I also really enjoy that although the cakes are a clear favourite and real show stoppers, there is always a place for the savoury too alongside the ever popular chocolate sprinkle cupcakes and sweet sweet coconut macaroons.
I could stand and watch the bakers work for hours in the little baking kitchen that sits just behind the coffee machine and in full view of the street, often bathed in natural light. It feel like that might have been my perfect job.
On one occasion I made sure to grab a few pieces of the individually portioned Christmas cake and as a traditionalist when it come to baking certain cakes, particularly ones that my parents make and love every year, I was unsure as to what I would think of this Christmas cake. I can confidently say that it was the best Christmas cake that I had ever had. Perfectly moist and the exact right amount and combination of fruits. Don’t tell my mum!
Again, I dragged my family all across London to find Violet Bakery the first time, they all enjoyed the result but I am not sure that they always enjoy the fruits of my labours quite as much as I do! We strolled the streets of Hackney, adorned with delicious baked goods and made our way towards Shoreditch and back into central London.
This bakery is so special in my opinion. If you love cakes, if you love baking. You really must try this spot and the cookbook it IMMENSE.
