HARVEST NEWRYBAR - BYRON BAY
The restaurant at Harvest is one of the most exciting dining experiences in the Northern Rivers, showcasing the diversity of the local region, supporting the farmers, growers and artisans behind everything it serves. Dishes are simple and honest, changing with the seasons.
During our visit to Australia in 2019 we were introduced to this mysterious and nostalgic little ‘town’ on the outskirts of Byron Bay. It was recommended to us that we visit this little haven and possibly avoid the main, over populated centre of Byron. We followed this advice and we are very glad that we did so.
As my parents were visiting friends in the area, we managed to wangle a babysitter for the night and we booked ourselves into a charming little airbnb in Bangalow. From there we got as short 10 minute taxi ride into Newrybar for an evening meal at the charming Harvest Restaurant.
We had explored the area ourselves during the day to find our bearings and on arrival in Newrybar, we were immediately under its spell. Especially me as it was home to a small handful of fabulous little concept stores/boutiques. Filled with stunning and quality locally made art, jewellery, gifts and clothing. It was perfectly measured, not at all overwhelming or distracting from the equals appeal of a glorious looking deli and coffee window, selling fresh pastries and brewed coffee. (I’ll swing back round to that spot.)
Newrybar is a one-street-town with just a few houses, shops and cafes that are so epic; they have turned Newrybar into a destination in itself. It’s a 15-minute drive from Byron Bay’s famous beaches and has the same laid-back vibe that the coastal town is know for, mixed with its own country charm.
When we returned in the evening, we knew that we were in for a treat. The restaurant was buzzing. The soft lull of conversations dn laughing spilling out over the clink of glasses. We were led to our table on the deck, warned of the potential of midges (I got a little nibbled). The menu and wine list was presented but a friendly and warm waitress. She went on to explain the local ingredients, the history behind the area and property and gave some great recommendations as to what we might want to order.
We sat back and relaxed, enjoying the company and the meal thoroughly. The food was great and we quickly recommended it to my parents when we met them the next day.
The next morning my husband ran back to the township and collected fresh pastries for breakfast.
